Week 4 Power Rankings

Where does each team stand after 1 month of baseball?

The Tigers are soaring, while the Orioles continue a somewhat mysterious free-fall. The National League, is really really good.

Rank Team Record The S&R Take
Los Angeles Dodgers18-10Tyler Glasnow looks to be headed to the injured list after leaving his last start with shoulder discomfort. It's only one month in, and while other teams lay their case for the "best team", I currently see no reason to move away from the defending champs. Good luck facing these guys in October.
San Diego Padres17-11The red-hot start has cooled off as the offense has now averaged a flat 2 runs/game over their last 3 full series, culminating with a dissapointing sweep at the hands of the Rays. It's too early to stop beleiving in this team's lineup depth and pitching makeup though. They're still 12-4 at home.
New York Mets19-9If Soto starts to pick it up soon, the trio of Lindor, Soto, and Alonso atop this Mets lineup is going to be extremely problematic for opposing pitching. Kodai Senga's ghost fork looks much improved, if that was even possible.
Chicago Cubs17-12The call about this team being able to run away with this division if the dominoes fall correctly seems to be holding true. They showed they can play with the big boys, and Pete Crow Armstrong is ready to take his leap from prospect to star.
Detroit Tigers18-10The best record in baseball since August 11, 2024? Yeah that belongs to the Detroit Tigers, who just took 3 straight from a tumbling Orioles ballclub in the span of 24 hours.
San Francisco Giants19-10I'm not sure how many of us pegged the Giants to be the team atop this division at any point this season. Deep, consistent starting pitching, along with a breakout from second-year star Jung-Hoo Lee has propelled this team to one of its more exciting starts in the last decade.
New York Yankees17-11Devin Williams finally got removed from the closer role, and Yankees fans couldn't be more excited to see Luke Weaver back in what looks to be a more permanent closer role for the time being.
Philadelphia Phillies15-13The Phils rebounded nicely from their Game 1 loss to the Cubs to end up taking 2 out of 3. Aaron Nola is 0-5 with a 5.4 ERA and 1.4 WHIP so far. When does the concern for him start to mount?
Arizona Diamondbacks15-13All Eugenio Suarez does is hit home runs. 4 in one game? Take a bow. The snakes travel to Queens to take on the Mets in what should be a fascinating set between a very good ballclub and the team with a 12-1 record at home. Strap in for those 3,
Texas Rangers15-13Tough way to lose that finale to the Giants. The Rangers starting pitching looks to be a key strength through this season - if Kumar Rocker can string together some good starts, a 1-2-3 punch of DeGrom, Eovaldi, and Leiter, with Rocker behind them, has the potential to shape up into an absoultely dominant rotation.
Seattle Mariners16-12The Mariners are this high moreso due to the teams they beat rather than my true belief in them as a team. The offense has certainly picked up, but how long will it last?
Boston Red Sox16-14This team is in the top 10 or top 5 in pretty much every major statistical offensive category. And that's with Rafael Devers batting .216 and Triston Casas batting under .200 - Watch out.
Cleveland Guardians15-12The ALCS runner up's from 2024 just lost 4 of 6 against the Yanks and Red Sox. Tough week for them, but it should get more manageable with 3 in a row against the Twins coming up.
Houston Astros14-13Yordan is back, and he showed the fans in Kansas City on Sunday with an moonshot to dead-center. Hunter Brown is a true Cy-Young candidate, and the starting pitching has the potential to carry them quite a ways this year.
Milwaukee Brewers14-15They've truly put the 0-x start behind the rearview mirror. The season is in full swing, and I have no doubt the crew are going to continue to, well, crew. They'll fight with the Cubs for a while before (in my opinion) the Cubs start to pull away.
Atlanta Braves12-15They've been hanging on and even started to put together winning stretches without both Acuna, and Strider, who is now due to miss more time with a pulled hamstring. Things are just not consistently going right for this team to start the year.
Kansas City Royals14-15Everyone except Bobby Witt Jr. is slumping right now. Even Cole Ragans is off to a rough start pitching to a 4.46 ERA and 1.17 WHIP through his first 6 starts. He looks to rejoin the rotation soon after dealing with some groin discomfort.
Toronto Blue Jays13-15The Kevin Gausman ejection was not something Blue Jay fans want to think about for long. Falling down the stairs was the icing on top, but the Blue Jays have plenty of positives to look at. They're only 2 games under .500 while prized acquisitions Anthony Santander and Andres Gimenez are BOTH batting under .200 - that's crazy.
Cincinnati Reds15-13It's hard to score double digit runs in a game of baseball. Well the Reds scored TWENTY-FOUR, yes, 24 runs in a mashing of Baltimore last week. Elly De La Cruz was a human highlight reel all series, and he's off to a great start this year.
Washington Nationals13-15The Nats are starting to surprise some of us. They might not have the high-end talent / names that we're looking for when trying to identify that next team to make a leap, but a good young core with solid starting pitching is going to greatly improve their outlook this year. They look to take 3/4 from the Mets later this afternoon.
Tampa Bay Rays14-14A sweep of the Padres probably warrants a higher ranking for the team, but I'm going to hold off for now. There are a lot of surprise stories for this young team, but the question remains if they can hold it all together until the return of Shane McClanahan. His prognosis just got worse.
St. Louis Cardinals12-16Nolan Arenado's walkoff HR electrified the St. Louis faithful. Former Reds top prospect Jose Barrero will look to make an impact against his former club when he joins the redbirds for their 3 games set in Cincinnati.
Minnesota Twins12-16Most Twins fans are probably feeling pretty encouraged after taking 5 of 6 from the White Sox and Angels. The challenge to not dig a deeper hole intensifies right away, as a 4-game trip to Cleveland awaits to start the week.
Baltimore Orioles10-17They could realistically be a spot lower given how bad they've looked to start the year. I get the whole "eliminate noise" mantra, but their starting pitching is bad. Like, REALLY BAD. Combine that with a middle-of-the-pack offense and, well, this is what you get.
Athletics14-14I wouldn't be surprised to see this team make a leap into the top half of the rankings by the next edition. They've done their jobs quietly, Jacob Wilson is a stud, and the recipe is brewing for the non-Oakland Athletics to start making some noise in what looks to be a jam-packed AL West.
Los Angeles Angels12-15The beginning of the season fire has worn off a bit, but this team certainly has pieces to be encouraged by. Kyren Paris has a bright future.
Pittsburgh Pirates11-18Skenes shuts down the Dodgers in LA, but this team is 11-18 with one of the worst offenses in baseball. It's going to be a not-so-fun year if you want the Pirates to win a lot of games.
Miami Marlins12-15I'm waiting for the wheels to fall off a team that's actually done much better than expecations after a month of baseball. Matt Mervis has really shown tremendous growth, and Max Meyer is 2-3 with a 3.18 ERA through his first 6 starts. I'll take that.
Chicago White Sox7-21Not much to say here. They're going to be flip-flopping from 29-30 all year long.
Colorado Rockies4-23I'll be the first to admit that I expected this team to have an offense that resembled much of the Athletics last year. It's safe to say that prediction was wrong. This team is not very good. And big time reinforcements are a long ways away.
